14:00 – 17:30: Seminar and AGM – Godfrey Mitchell Theatre

The River Thames flows through the heart of London and, while it was once a principal maritime transport corridor for freight, its role today is more varied but no less important.

The seminar will address many of the current issues for the river. Passenger traffic has grown significantly but, following COP 26, what are the prospects for reducing the carbon footprint? Historic infrastructure, such as Hammersmith Bridge has become difficult to maintain – what are the options? The Thames Tideway project, being constructed under the river, will remove the most polluting overflows from the river and has made extensive use of the river to construct the tunnels and shafts.

The river is also a source of risk from both navigation and flooding. The Thames Barrier was completed nearly 40 years ago and the Environment Agency has underway a programme of flood risk management to manage, maintain and enhance the infrastructure works. The four presentations at the seminar will be given by experts currently involved in addressing these important issues.
